One of my all-time favorite films is Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï, starring Alain Delon. I wasn't expecting much from Anton Corbijn's The American, certainly not a modern take on Melville's classic. From the open scene I was transfixed. The pace, story, cinematography, and most of all the style of the film are equaled on by Le Samouraï.
